Virtual Material

This work uses generative AI to explore material qualities rather than to quickly generate forms. It asks a simple question: can a virtual environment preserve material thinking, not just produce convincing visuals?
The project begins with three foundational architectural materials: metal, glass, and stone. All material images are generated through text prompts only, without reference images. By removing visual input, the work tests whether material character can be shaped through language rather than imitation.
These material studies expand into form through three lounge chair variations, translating each material’s cues into structure and silhouette. The same logic then scales from furniture to interior spaces and architectural forms, where reflectivity, translucency, density, and texture become spatial rules.
Timelapse videos introduce time. As light shifts, surfaces remain recognizable yet subtly off, creating a gap between recognition and belief. In that gap, the work reframes material not as a fixed truth, but as something negotiated through perception in virtual space.
