Hunter Gatherer positions its market and restaurant within China’s “safe food” conversation, defining its offering as “real food” traced and controlled from seed to table. Produce is sourced largely from the brand’s farms in Chongming and Yantai, and it sometimes arrives still dusted with soil as a direct reminder of where it comes from.
The customer journey is structured around transparency and learning. It shows how ingredients are grown and handled while reinforcing the company’s mission. A procession of full-height barn doors leads into the 580 m² venue and opens to a light-filled restaurant zone. Communal tables sit under broad beams and pendant lighting, creating a scene reminiscent of a harvest festival. At the entrance, “farm windows” broadcast live video from the Yantai farm in Shandong, bringing the farm’s daily rhythms into the retail experience.
The project was later featured on Powershop 5: New Retail Design (2016).
